The most popular way to use essential oils is diffusing them with an oil diffuser.

Breaking the oils down and evenly dispersing its particles ensures that its scent is not overbearing to smell.

You can purchase a traditional diffuser which is most common.

Or, you can use a humidifying diffuser.

A humidifying diffuser is the combination of both an oil diffuser and an air humidifier.

These can be particularly helpful during dry winter months or when you have a cold.

However, if you don’t have a diffuser, you can try diffusing your oils in a DIY way. You can try:

2. Inhaling

The most simple way to use essential oils is to directly inhale them. This is a great option if you don’t have a diffuser or need a quick moment of self care that has lasting effects all day.

You can directly inhale oils in a couple of ways including:

  • •Directly from the bottle
  • •Steaming with hot water
  • •From your hands

First off, you can take a good whiff of the oil directly from the bottle. Simply put the bottle up to your nose and take a few deep breaths.

Secondly, try adding a couple of drops to a steaming bowl of water. Then, place a small towel or washcloth over your face, put your head over the bowl, and deeply inhale for a few breaths.

Lastly, you can put a few drops of oils on your hands and simply inhale.  However, to avoid skin irritation from the oil, be sure to first dilute the oil with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or olive oil.  As a rule of thumb, add one teaspoon of carrier oil for every two to three drops of essential oil.

3. Adding to a Bath or Shower

This is my favorite way to use essential oils every day. After a long day or for when it’s cold out, adding a couple of drops to my shower is the perfect self care treat.

To use essential oils in your shower, add a few drops to your shower walls or outer edges.  Then, allow the shower water to heat up.  The steam of the shower should radiate the smells of the essential oils.

If you want to step up your relaxing bath game, you can add a few drops of essential oils to your bathtub. I recommend using a carrier oil to avoid skin irritation. Mix between 5 and 20 drops of essential oils with 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil and then add to your bath.

Additionally, there are different bath products that you can add to your bath water that include essential oils such as:

  • •Bath bombs
  • •Bath oils
  • •Bubble bath

Essential oils are a simple way to make your bath or shower feel more luxurious.

4. Applying Topically

Another simple way to use essential oils is to apply them topically to your skin. You can apply them to your skin topically for:

First, you can add a couple of drops of essential oils to the pulse points of your body. These include the palms of your wrists, behind your ears, inside your elbows, and the backs of your knees. Pulse points are the points on your body where body heat is emitted and fragrances develop faster and stronger.

Second, you can use essential oils as a targeted treatment. For example, you can apply certain oils to specific areas of your body in order to relieve pain or for soothing effects.

Before applying them topically to your skin, consider the following rules:

  1. Do not apply oils to broken or sensitive skin areas
  2. Only apply one or two drops at a time
  3. Dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil before applying

5. Massaging

A massage is one of the best ways to relieve stress.  Massages have been shown to not only make you feel good, but to also relieve chronic pain.  Combining the aromatherapy effects of essential oils with your massage oil makes for an overall more relaxing massage experience.

You can grab a friend and give one another back massages, or you can give yourself a foot massage.  To give yourself a foot massage using essential oils, you’ll need:

  1. A warm, damp towel
  2. 2 teaspoons of carrier oil
  3. 2 drops of your favorite essential oils

Prepare your massage oil by combining the essential oil and carrier oil in a small bowl. Then, prepare your feet by cleaning them off with the warm, damp towel. Once your feet are ready, rub the oil all over. Press into the souls of your feet and pull on your toes.

Foot massages are one of the most effective ways to use essential oils because the feet absorb oils faster than all other parts of the body.
