There are some basic things you’ll want when you start a meditation room. These are things that will help you let go of stress and create mental space. They will also help keep you comfortable, so you can let go and stay in the moment.

An Uncluttered Space

Life is often filled with cluttered physical and mental space. When you start a meditation room, one of the first steps is to remove the clutter. 

A cluttered surroundings can increase anxiety. Plus, the items in your space can trigger stressed-out thoughts or feelings. So take some time to clear your space. 

Yoga Mat/Rug 

On a basic level, you need a place to sit and be comfortable. A yoga mat or small rug is the perfect solution.

It helps to center you in the room. This is your sacred place to go and just be. Once you’re on the mat, you stay in the moment. The past and the future don’t live here.

Small Pillows/Cushions

Meditation pillows and cushions are important for your comfort. You can’t stay in the moment if you’re in pain or discomfort. 

Put them under your legs, behind your back, or wherever you need additional support.

Extras to personalize your meditation space

Your meditation room doesn’t have to be fancy. You can start a meditation room with just the few items mentioned above. 

But once you’re in your space, you’ll likely want to personalize it to help  create mental space. 

Here are a few things you may want to include. 

Candles

Lighting candles can help trigger relaxation. Candles scented with a relaxing fragrance further create a sense of calm.

Additionally, candles can help if your mind easily wanders, or if you like to keep your eyes open when you meditate. When you feel your thoughts go into the past or future, bring your focus back to the flame.

If you don’t want to use real candles, try flameless candles.

Blankets

You meditate to give yourself mental space. But the reality is that you’re still in your physical body. And that physical body can get cold.

Blankets allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes so they don’t distract you. 

Blankets also offer cushioning. Maybe you want to lie down and fold a blanket under your head. Or you need support under your knees. Blankets are very adaptable and can offer comfort in multiple ways.

Music 

While music isn’t essential for meditation, it’s a great way to get out of your own head. Play something peaceful or calming. There are lots of music mixes specifically for meditation. 

Maybe you set up a speaker in your space. Or you can play music on a smart device. 

It’s great for convenience to have a music system that you can turn on with your voice. That way, if you forget to start the music, you don’t have to disrupt your practice. 

Crystals

You may find it helpful to have a container of your favorite crystals in your meditation space. That way, they’re accessible whenever you need them.

Crystals assist with healing. They’re also a source of positive energy. If you’re new to crystals, you may want to start with a small set to offer you a variety of healing powers. 

Crystals are great for whenever you feel like you need specified healing. 

Essential Oils/Diffuser

Essential oils can also uplift your mood or reduce anxiety. And they’re another great addition for when you start a meditation room.

You can store your oils in the same area as your crystals. Have them easily accessible for when you need them.

You may want to place a diffuser in the room. That way you can diffuse the oils to fill your space with their scent. But if you’d rather keep things simple, you can just place a drop of the oil on your palms, rub your palms together, and place your hands over your face.

Lighting

The lighting is important for your space. Get a good set of curtains to block out ambient light. If you have a dimmer set to your lights, make sure to turn them to low. 

Candles and other dull lights can also help. Put some in your space, especially if you don’t have a dimmer. This will help you get the ambience perfect.
